Sharmilla Bhima is a Senior Associate and a member of the Corporate and Commercial Practice Group.
Prior to joining the Group in August 2007, she was a practising barrister in general private practice covering all areas of law. From September 1999 to June 2001, she was a member of the Chambers of Clarel Benoit, Mauritius undertaking predominantly offshore and commercial matters with a fair amount of taxation laws. She has carried out Legal Due Diligence abroad for foreign clients and has conducted training courses for the local Police on Intellectual Property Law. From July 2001 until July 2007, she was in private practice undertaking both criminal and civil litigation including employment law and matrimonial matters before the Supreme Court.
Recent criminal cases have included appearance in 2005 as Junior counsel in a major money-laundering trial before the Intermediate Court, POLICE V P.G NOEL AND ANOR, appearing for Accused No. 1, the General Manager of the Mauritius Commercial Bank Ltd. She has also undertaken advisory work advising on civil, commercial, corporate and employment matters and appeared before Disciplinary Committees. Advice on commercial work has comprised drafting and advising on MOUs.
She graduated from the BPP Law School, United Kingdom. She read law at The University of Reading, United Kingdom and graduated with a Bachelor in Laws. She spent her pupillage at Thomas More Chambers, London and was called to the Bar of England & Wales in July 1998 at Lincoln's Inn. She was called to the Mauritian Bar in September 1999.
She is a member of the Mauritius Bar Council (co-opted member), Executive Committee of the English Speaking Union (ESU) of which she is the Assistant Treasurer and represents the ESU on the Executive Committee of the President's Fund for Creative Writing in English, one of the Vice-Presidents of the Women's Foundation for World Peace (an NGO) and speaks English and French.
She is the Chairman of the Industrial Property Tribunal and one of the Vice-Chairperson of the Motor Vehicle Insurance Arbitration Committee.
She has helped with the preparation of a chapter in a recently published book "Investing in Mauritius - Ocean of Opportunities" Mrs. M-L Lam Hung, Bar-at-Law, on the protection of Intellectual Property rights in Mauritius.
